The Akhaltsikhe Castle is located on the Potskhovi river. As most places in Georgia, its history reflects the fault line situation between the Turkish, Persian and Russian worlds.
With some of its buildings dating back to the 9th century, the castle has been damaged and destroyed many times : Tamerlane (Amir Timur) in the 14th century, a Mongol prince in the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire in the 16th all conquered and damaged the castle.
The castle finally fell to Georgian and Russian troops in the 19th century and underwent a major renovation in 2012.
The complex comprises a christian Georgian Church and the Haji Ahmad – Pasha Jakeli Mosque. In the old district you will find a Synagogue and an Armenia Apostolic Church.
This place offer as much as you can expect from the Georgian tradition of tolerance and a place in Eurasia : tolerance, diversity, historical milestones and a mosaic of faiths and cultures.
