Back in March 2025, I visited the city of Besalma in Gagauzia, Moldova 🇲🇩
On the Silk Roads and the intricate and complex Eurasia, life coexists with tragedies on multiple levels, and the sense of being anchored coexists with a link to some places very far away.
This monument is next to the National Gagauz History and Ethnographic Museum. The lady who guided my visit in the museum offered me a passionate glimpse on the history of the Gagauz people and the dedication of a multifaceted few to keep alive this heritage.Â
The Gagauz are one of the many yet unique examples of the rich Eurasian tapestry : Turkic language, Orthodox faith, spread across Moldova, Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Türkiye and Belarus 🇲🇩🇷🇺🇧🇬🇺🇦🇹🇷🇧🇾
Still, next to this museum dedicated to keeping alive a heritage that is deeply anchored, the monument to the Afghan war commemorates those from Moldova who died far away from home.
The pain of a mother loosing her son in a war is a tragedy. A son falling far way from home adds tragedy to a tragedy.
