Close to Dushanbe, and nested in a fertile valley surrounded by mountain peaks, the Hisor fortress was erected somewhere between 2000 and 3000 years ago.
The civilisations, Empires, kingdoms and Khanates that stepped in this valley and left a mark on this fortress are too numerous to cite : Achaemenids, Greco-Bactrian, Sassanids, Kushan, Timurids, Shaybanids. Even the former Soviet Union has left a mark with the memorial to the great patriotic war, right next to the main door.
Rebuilt and renovated many times, this fortress is a testimony that the layers of times persist on the ancient Silk Roads, though each coming and going civilisation may reframe, reshape or even rewrite history.
The outer shell may differ in its form, but the substance, soul and mysteries remain through times.
