Armenia - Aivazovsky - Noah descending from the Ararat

Armenia – National Gallery

Hovhannes Aïvasovsky

During my visit, the National Gallery held an exhibition in honour of the Armenian painter Hovhannes Aïvasovsky. I admired some of his paintings in Tachkent and Tallinn before. Admiring his work in his country had a special meaning for me.

Among this rich exhibition, I picked 2 paintings that seemed a natural choice :

  • Noah descending from the Ararat, the mountain and biblical episode that has become the symbol of Armenia
  • Night in Constantinople, the 2nd Rome and a city that specifically embodies the mysteries of Eurasia
